Dr Maria Nieto plays an active role in addressing climate-related issues at both European and international levels. She has been involved in several initiatives within the Network for Greening the Financial System since 2017, with a particular emphasis on climate risk scenarios and the development of relevant models.

Dr Maria Nieto has held senior roles at Banco de España in financial stability and economic policy, representing the bank in Basel Committee and European Commission working groups. She was a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta for over eight years and previously served as a senior economist at the ECB, forecasting euro area economic trends. Maria spent ten years as a senior financial sector expert for the IMF, contributing to financial stability assessments, technical assistance and research. She publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals and serves on advisory boards of the Institute of International Monetary Research, Central Banking Publications Training as well as the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance and Journal of Financial Regulation.

Dr. Nieto was Deputy Manager Director of Spain’s Economic Advisory Team during the country’s entry into the euro area.
